Joan Wilder's (Kathleen Turner) quiet and sophisticated New York lifestyle is suddenly turned into a whirlwind adventure. From darkest Colombia, her troublesome sister makes a frantic phone call screaming for help. The unsuspecting Joan is on her way to buy her sister's freedom - but she doesn't realise that just about every crook is Colombia will soon be breathing down her neck!

The rip-roaring chase for a priceless emerald is on. As Joan has the only map for the mysterious El Corazon Jewel, crooks, con-men and even crocodiles are out to get her. Her only hope is to team up with the gun-toting jungle hustler Jack Colton (Michael Douglas) - mean mercenary who it seems is only motivated by money. But Joan has put her trust in Jack and together the unlikely couple stumble through the steaming jungle dicsovering they have more in common than just money and adventure - and all the time the villains are closing in...
