Life is looking good as Detective Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) and his wife prepare for the birth of their first baby. Sipowicz's partner, Bobby Simone (Jimmy Smits), is also beginning a new romance with fellow detective Diane Russell (Kim Delaney).

Yet things are far from perfect, because as Sipowicz and Russell each continue their private struggle with the bottle, they find themselves sharing another unexpected bond—the tragic death of a family member.
