Baz Luhrmann's Epic Romances

Synopsis

Baz Luhrmann's epic romances are motion picture experiences as grand and passionate as the themes that run through them. The Shakespearean Classic, the Movie Musical, and a historical Outback Epic are reinvented through the visionary director's unique style.

Classic stories told through comedy, romance, action, drama: visually lush, musically powerful, daring and grand, spectacular yet always emotional.

These are movie lover's movies, perhaps summed up best by Time's Richard Schickel who wrote of Luhrmann's latest film Australia: "Somebody is surely going to say that they don't make'em like this anymore, so let me be one of the first to do so."

Australia

1939,Australia. When tempestuous, highly-strung beauty Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) finds herself unexpectedly marooned in the outback and under siege from plotting cattle barons, she is forced to team up with a repugnent, rough-hewn cattle drover (Hugh Jackman) and a ragtag band of outback misfits. To save Lady Ashley's property, this unlikely group joins forces on a transformative journey, while driving a herd of cattle across the world's most beautiful yet unforgiving terrain. Along the way, she falls under the beguiling spell of an enchanting aboriginal child (Brandon Walters) and falls in love with the drover. When they are torn apart by powerful enemies, they must find each other amidst the bombing of the city of Darwin by the Japanese. Painted with the bold cinematic brush from movie epics of yesteryear, and filled with raucous comedy, action, romance and drama, the film is played out against the sweeping canvas of Australia's broad, vast, sunburnt outback.

Moulin Rouge!

Baz Luhrmann's groundbreaking reinvention of the modern musical. Nicole Kidman stars as Satine, the "sparkling diamond" of the Moulin Rouge, irresistible to the wealthiest men of Europe. But it is Christian, apenniless writer played by Ewan McGregor, who wins her heart. John Leguizamo and Jim Broadbent co-star in a magical, mystical, musical tour-de-force of laughter, tears, and above all things, love.

Romeo + Juliet

Baz Luhrmann's iconoclastic adaptation of Shakespeare's play unfolds with its heart on its sleeve and guns ablaze. Set in the colorful, urban backdrop of Verona Beach, Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes play Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers, torn between their love for each other, and the bitter hatred between their families.
